What does an SPD actually do?

An SPD responds to a short-duration voltage surge, limits the voltage reaching the installation and diverts surge current toward earth. This helps reduce damage risk to connected electrical and electronic equipment.

  1. A transient surge reaches the installation

    Short-duration overvoltage may result from lightning activity or electrical switching.

  2. The SPD limits the transient voltage

    The device reacts quickly, clamps the voltage and creates a protective path for surge current.

  3. Surge current is diverted toward earth

    Excess surge current is directed through the protective path until the event passes.

Effective earthing, correct device selection and short connection paths are important to SPD performance.

Provides leakage protection according to the confirmed installation specification.
Earthing
Provides the required protective path and must be in suitable condition.
Building lightning protection
A separate system may be required depending on the building and risk assessment.
An SPD helps reduce risk, but it cannot guarantee that every appliance will survive every surge or a direct lightning event.

SPD installation questions.

Do I still need SPD if I already have MCB and RCCB / ELCB?

They serve different purposes. MCB handles overcurrent, RCCB / ELCB handles leakage, while SPD limits transient overvoltage. One does not replace the others.

Is the package price final?

Each displayed price covers the matching single-phase or three-phase standard materials and installation package for a suitable existing DB. Any DB modification, wiring repair, earthing repair or additional work is explained before proceeding.

Can I choose the SPD type or rating myself?

The correct device must be confirmed after checking the supply phase, DB arrangement, earthing and existing installation. Customers do not need to select the specification themselves.

Will SPD stop all lightning damage?

No protection can promise that. SPD helps limit transient overvoltage and reduce risk, but the outcome depends on surge severity, earthing, installation design and other protection measures.

Does SPD need checking or replacement?

The status indicator should be checked periodically. Request an electrician inspection if it shows end-of-life, there is visible damage, or a significant electrical event has occurred.
